Entrepreneurs, do you sometimes wonder if you can overcome fear and self-doubt? I believe you can.
Congratulations, you decided to be an entrepreneur and take charge of your own life. When I first decided to become an entrepreneur, I never imagined how hard the journey would be for me during those first few years. I went from being excited at the thought of being my own boss, to days where I almost questioned if I had made the right decision. Please note that I am not saying that being an entrepreneur is a hard journey for everyone, but for some of us it is.
As most of you know, planning is key to any thriving business. A good business plan is your roadmap to success. In the end, however, it does not matter how much planning you do. If you do not love who you are, if you are not happy with what you are doing, and if you are not clear and in alignment, you will find it harder to help yourself and others.
My ‘Energy Drainers’
In my journey as an entrepreneur, I have encountered fear and self-doubt. I refer to them as my ‘Energy Drainers’. There were days where I would wake up with tons of energy, focused and on top of my goals. However, there were days too where I let self-doubt get the best of me. On those days I felt like my energy was being slowly sucked out of me. I could not concentrate and felt frustrated. I sometimes asked myself if I had made the right decision to become an entrepreneur instead of returning to Corporate. You see, although my father and grandfather were entrepreneurs, all I knew was Corporate life. However, I also knew that I did not want to go back to working for someone else.
Entrepreneurs are different, they think differently. I had to reassess my situation and renew my faith in why I had chosen to be an entrepreneur. After looking at my WHY I chose to become an entrepreneur, I worked even harder on renewing faith in my WHY. I know being an entrepreneur must be something that makes my SOUL happy. I know that I will have good days and bad days. But of course, no one wants any bad days. I finally concluded that on the days I found myself feeling drained, not up to the task, I had to step back and acknowledge what I was feeling.
I had to make time to assess why I felt so drained. I could no longer try to bury my feelings, forget about them and continue to try to do my work, let alone help anyone else do theirs. By not confirming my ‘Energy Drainers’ I was not helping myself or anyone else. I needed to love myself enough to care to make time to dissect these ‘Energy Drainers’, have faith and get stronger.
I know that I am not the only one who has gone through this, so let’s talk about some of the things that drain our energy and how we can manage them.
5 things that can drain our energy
Ah, recognize this one? Comparing yourself to others. Some people call it “Comparasitis.” One of the biggest challenges for us is accepting the fact that we do indeed compare ourselves to others. That as humans, sometimes we are guilty of being jealous of others success. If you are wasting your energy by constantly comparing yourself to others, then you are just hurting yourself. We are all unique. God made us all different and special. The worst thing we can do is compare ourselves or try to emulate someone who is successful. We can study them and learn from them, but should never envy them.
Success comes to us in different ways and at different times. Our entrepreneurial journey is different for all us. I have found that faith, hope, and love have shown me how to concentrate on my own ventures. I appreciate others success and find joy in blessing their success and being truly happy for them. I know that it takes hard work and dedication at each level of climbing our own ladders as an entrepreneur. Instead of draining my energy by being jealous of how successful others are, I fill my soul with love and celebrate their success.
2. Fear of failure
Fear absolutely drains our energy! If not managed properly it can stop us from achieving our dreams. I believe that fear never goes away. Whether it be fear of public speaking, leaving your full-time job to start a business of your own or even fear of launching your first product and failing. Fear rears its ugly head in many ways. It is something that we must deal with. I believe that it is sometimes a good thing. Fear reminds me that I can achieve more in life and business if I can work through and conquer it. It makes me remember my WHY.
I find ways to help myself move beyond my fears so that I can continue to help others. No one likes fear. Fear is always a challenge. However, if you always remember that love is stronger than any fear, then fear will never win. If you do not love yourself and only doubt your every action, how can you possibly help anyone else? Whenever fear rears its ugly head, remember your WHY and acknowledge love first. Trust yourself instead of doubting yourself.
3. Unhealthy ‘Energy Drainers’
Everyone deals with fear in different ways. Some people get depressed and literally have days where they cannot move from their beds. Some people use alcohol or drugs to temporarily relieve their fears. Some people do not fully acknowledge their fears and move forward blindly in circles like a hamster on a spinning wheel, not getting much accomplished. Some people have anxiety and are ashamed of telling others. These are all things I call Unhealthy ‘Energy Drainers’. If you do not acknowledge them then you will never have a business that is Good To The Soul. More importantly, you are risking your health.
4. You question everything
What did they really mean?
We have the habit of constantly questioning what people say to us. Entrepreneurship is not for everyone. Everyone does not have to understand our choice to become entrepreneurs. People may say things which hurt us if we misunderstand them. I choose to not believe that every person wishes to intentionally hurt us with their words. I believe that they just do not fully understand our WHY. Someone can say something to us about our choice of being an entrepreneur because they may be concerned for us and want to protect us.
Unfortunately, there are others who do intentionally say things to hurt us. We should not let our feelings be hurt by someone else’s words or suggestions. When we overthink what someone is saying to us it drains our energy. I have encountered people who have said things to me which I did not fully appreciate as an entrepreneur. However, I cannot waste my time or energy by getting angry at them. Therefore, do not waste your energy on their words. I bless them and move forward in my business. I used to feel that I had to explain my WHY to everyone and defend it fiercely, I now know that my WHY is just that my, special WHY.
5. You are unorganized, a procrastinator or always making excuses?
Big time energy drainers! How many times have you made excuses all the while knowing that in the end, you are only hurting yourself? Life gets in the way. Things happen daily. Either you dwell in losing time over things that happen in life or you acknowledge them and find a way to move forward in your business. I am not saying become an ice queen or king with no feelings. I am saying that we cannot succeed in business if we do not learn to get over things we cannot control. We can, however, control the space we work in. If you are a person who is unorganized then you need to find a way to get organized. Are you someone who is always blaming others and making excuses? If this is the case you are then once again draining your own energy. Do not blame others and make excuses for your lack of taking action. We do better when we confront our mistakes and do not rely on excuses. Are you a procrastinator? How is that working for you?
3 things you can do to minimize these ‘Energy Drainers’
1) Pray and meditate
As you already know I do not hide the fact that I love a higher power which some of us call God (you may call him something else or not believe at all in God…that is your choice) and through his love, I rise daily. I pray several times throughout the day especially when I am feeling something is not right. Praying helps me. I also now meditate each morning and night. If for some reason I cannot find the time for meditating I find that my day is not as successful as I would like it to be. Meditating makes me function better and relaxes me.
2) Surround yourself with people that are at your level and share the same goals
You have heard the saying ‘You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with’. I find this to be true. I now surround myself only with people that help me grow in my journey as an entrepreneur. I am Thankful for my circle of friends who are honest with me and help give me direction so that I too can have a business I enjoy and is Good To The Soul. I have surrounded myself with women who help one another rise to their best potential. I remove myself from situations that I feel are ‘Energy Drainers’ or just a total waste of my time. Time is precious. I do not have time to waste. I prefer having more time to spend with my loved ones and good friends. I, therefore, try my best to stay away from energy draining vampires who waste my time. Surround yourself with a ‘Tribe’ of likeminded people. People who truly want to help you succeed. Also, make sure you pay it forward and help them as well.
3) Read… read … and read
I have always loved reading. I love libraries and yes, Barnes & Noble is one of my favorite stores. I know that my degree, certifications, and seminars are not enough for me. I find that reading and learning new things is a reminder to me that I do not know everything. There is so much to be learned. You do not know what you do not know unless you read more and learn more. I try my best to not drain my energy on wasting my time watching mindless television. It may seem obvious that constant learning is essential, but in our busy lives most of us do not make the time for it. For me, reading relaxes me. I also play audiobooks in my car so that I can constantly learn something new. Podcasts are also on my daily list of things to do.
I now have a routine that I try hard to follow daily. It works for me. I pray daily and I meditate as much as possible. I remind myself daily of my WHY I started this business. I have a tribe of supportive friends who I can talk to and they help me and I help them. I try to learn one new thing each day. I also try to help someone anyone in any way I can. Finally, I do all things with love which I feel are Good To The Soul. Look at your life and business and be conscious of what ‘Energy Drainers’ are stopping you from running a business that is Good To The Soul. I am sure that you decided to become an entrepreneur to make life better for you or someone you love. If you do it right, it will make every part of your life better.
