Getting small business owners out of being stuck in social media
What do you do when you feel stuck and overwhelmed in keeping up with all the changes in social media? It happens more than we care to admit. As business owners we wear many hats. We find ourselves in situations where we are stressed trying to handle it all ourselves. Whether it be the day to day business activities, scheduling time for social media, or making time for family events. It sometimes seems like there is never enough time to do it all. Well we shouldn’t feel the need to have to do it all on our own. Social media management and keeping your website updated are very time consuming tasks. Why not delegate some of these task to a professional who can help you get unstuck in your business?
My suggestions to get you unstuck:
Take a moment to look at what you are good at -versus- what you are not so good at
Like I said, it’s easy to assume we can do it all by ourselves. Well it’s not so easy sometimes, is it? Take a moment to look and see what you are best at. What tasks will be more productive for you to engage in that will bring you more money in business. Then take a look at what you are not so good at and outsource it. For example are you good at website maintenance or are you wasting time trying to figure it out on your own. Are you good at e-mail marketing or are you struggling? Are you a perfectionist and reluctant to let someone else handle it for you? Okay don’t get offended, but I am going to say it is Control Freak a better way to put it? Try loosening your grip. Delegating to others is freedom for you to use your genius on something else. You need to examine ways for better use of your time.
Think you can’t afford to outsource?
Do you think you can’t afford to pay a professional to help you? Well you don’t know if you can afford help unless you ask. Social media is very time consuming and changes almost daily. It cannot be done properly in your spare time, nor should it be done by a friend or family member just because you may think that you are saving money. Remember as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. If you want to get out of feeling stuck and overwhelmed my advice is for you to delegate your social media management to an experienced professional.
You’re stuck with too many options
There are so many social media platforms to choose from, which can be a good thing or a bad thing. So many business owners feel that they need to be on every platform so they can be seen everywhere. Well this is a sure way to get stuck and frustrated. Why? Because they find out that they do not have the necessary time to keep up with posting consistently on so many platforms. They get discouraged, give up and stop posting altogether.
Every business is different as is every social media platform. You should not feel the need to be on all of them. My advice is for business owners to take the time to speak with an experienced social media manager so they can come to an agreement as to what social media platforms are best suited for their particular business requirements.
You’re stuck going down the same rabbit hole
It’s easy to get distracted on things other than work when we are on Facebook or Instagram. It’s like going down a rabbit hole. Do you find yourself getting distracted and then complaining that you did not have enough time in your day to do your work? It’s so easy to get sucked in checking out everyone post, messages and tweets only to realize you’ve just wasted hours of your precious time. My suggestion is for you to chose a specific time of day and amount of time you want to go on Facebook or Twitter and stick to it. If you have to, just set your timer as a reminder.
You’re stuck, because you are not delegating
It’s crazy right? If you are like me and you love to write, then how can you not find the time to do it properly? Well it happens, work happens, life happens, taking the kids to soccer practice happens. And it’s not just a matter of writing the blog is it? No. It’s everything else that goes along with it for proper SEO (search engine optimization). Just let go and let someone else help you. You can delegate most of your blog content. You would be surprised how affordable it is for someone else to do the research and write a few blogs for you and free you up to do more important tasks. Same goes for what I call time suckers, like creating graphics and researching content for your platforms. Delegate – delegate – delegate to someone who can do your SEO, website maintenance, research for blogs and social media.
Think about it, what’s more important, running your business properly or getting frustrated and stuck on tasks that you can easily outsource to someone else. I’d bet that if you let go of some of these tasks you may find a whole new super business owner who is in charge and committed to growing his business where he is most needed. You should be using your time on the most critical tasks of your business, the tasks that only you can do.
